Many of us have heard about the potential dangers of using non stick cookware, but we may not have heard enough about it to throw out those pans. Another concern is that stainless steel and aluminum pans are now starting to raise red flags for health reasons with researchers and proponents of detoxification.

Teflon coated aluminum pots and pans use a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). In 2006 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advised that PFOA be labeled a “likely carcinogen”. Manufacturers are cutting down production of the line and developing new products. Meanwhile, consumers continue to buy the products thinking they are safe.

However, studies indicate the exposure to PFOA affects the brain, prostate, liver, and kidneys. A liver cleanse and a kidney cleanse may help, but why introduce toxins in the first place when you can avoid them? When rats were studied, several young rats died and female rats showed changes in the size of their pituitary glands. There is also the suggestion that it causes tumors. There were even toxins in the air surrounding a Teflon coated pan in use.

Many of us are already aware of the dangers of using non stick pans. Therefore, we dragged our old aluminum and stainless steel pans out of storage and started using them. However, there is some concern with these vessels as well. Aluminum reacts with some foods and this is a real cause for alarm since aluminum is becoming a main player in studies on Alzheimer’s.

Stainless steel is a better solution, but it can release nickel and possibly other metals into foods. This can be a serious problem for people with allergies to nickel or other metals.

The best choice? Turn to Grandma’s pots and pans. Good old cast iron is not only nontoxic, but it is actually good for you. Don’t worry about anemia when you are cooking with a cast iron pan. This is a great way to get even cooking without endangering your health and thwarting detoxification. Enamel cookware is also safe and easy to clean. Some manufacturers offer cast iron cookware with enamel coating.
