It can be quite difficult to know what vitamin supplement to select when there is so much to choose from. As you walk down the aisle of the pharmacy, you can see tons being displayed neatly on the shelves. Some cost more than the rest; but is expensive really better? Are those with advanced formulas better than standard ones?

Well, the most important factor is to choose one that suits your needs. A vitamin supplement that can help your spouse for weak joints may not be necessary for you. Also, the needs of males and females differ somewhat. Age and specific health issues also play a part. The requirements of a 50 versus a 30 year old is going to be different.

Vitamin E, often called nature’s youthful vitamin, is wonderful in small doses as it has antioxidant properties. These properties help fight free radicals in the body which can come from pollution and even dyes and preservatives in food. It also helps build healthy muscle and keep joints limber. Too much vitamin E can have a detrimental effect on any medical condition you may have and even cause toxicity in the blood.

While iron is important for females who are getting pregnant or at child-bearing age, those who are in the midst of menopause need about half the dosage. Too much iron is known to cause constipation. Men also have increase risk of heart attacks as well.

It is also not necessary to go for vitamins that are of the highest strength. Sometimes, too much supplementation can be a bad thing. Birth defects have been known to happen when a woman gets too much vitamin A while high levels of iron can increase the risk of heart attack. Hence, you should always ask your doctor for some guidance. Very often, you will find that he or she will advise you, according to the medical condition you may have.

You may then ask: is it really necessary for you to take vitamin supplements? The answer is yes, if you are lacking in the essential ones. Also, do note that it is not that easy to get all the vitamins and minerals you need through your diet, especially if you are not dilligently tracking it. And even if you monitor your nutritional intake like a hawk, you may have to eat quite a bit each day to cover all your vitamin and mineral basis. For this reason, there are many formulas of vitamin and mineral supplements.

Consider your individual preferences. If you dislike dairy products or cannot tolerate them, you will want a supplement with extra calcium and vitamin D. If your doctor tells you that you may be anemic, a supplement with extra iron may be necessary. In short, do your research and choose wisely.
