If you are lactose intolerant, it simply means that you cannot digest foods or drink that contains lactos. Lactose is the sugar found in milk and foods made with milk. If you should consume lactose, you get abdominal cramps and upset and may also experience gas, diarrhea or swelling in your stomach. You need to go through a breath, blood or a stool test for a diagnosis of this condition. You may hear the terms, dairy product intolerant, lactase deficient, or milk intolerance. All these terms refer to the same lactose intolerance.

The small intestine is where milk and milk products are usually broken down. This is where the enzyme, lactase is put into action. When your small intestine does not have enough lactase present to digest the milk and milk products, you start to develop symptoms that are uncomfortable and can be painful.

To make the diagnosis of lactose intolerance, your doctor will instruct you to drink a sweet drink that will contain lactose. Your doctor will then either test your breath, your blood or your stool for undigested lactose. Babies are often put through a stool test to test for lactose intolerance.

Although lactose intolerance is not life threatening, you will need to be watchful over your diet. If you need to avoid milk or milk related products, then you may want to consider substituting your calcium requirements with other foods or supplementation. Foods that are best avoided include ice cream, ice milk, cream, sherbet, butter, cottage cheese, certain cheeses, and also yogurt. Prepared foods that contain milk as an ingredient include breads, salad dressings, cereal, cakes and cake mixes, cookies, pancakes, biscuits and certain frozen dinners.

It is important that you check through the food labels to determine if the foods contain milk ingredients or not. Words that mean milk ingredients include creamed, dried milk, butter, cheese, cream, lactose, milk, milk solids, powdered milk, skim milk, whey, and also whey solids. Some individuals can consume small portions of milk containing foods with no problems at all. Aged cheeses such as cheddar and Swiss cheese contain only a little lactose, so you may be able to consume these without noticing any symptoms of discomfort.

It is possible to purchase pills from your pharmacy that are made to help you digest milk and milk products. The pills are lactase enzyme caplets and the liquid drops are lactase enzyme drops. These pills or drops are taken prior to eating or drinking milk or milk products. You should read and follow all instructions before using these products.

You can also purchase special milk that has either less lactose (lactose-reduced milk) than regular milk or they are lactose substitute products such as soymilk.

Calcium is an important need for your body, so ensure that you eat more of other calcium containing foods such as broccoli, tofu, sardines, collard greens or turnip greens.
