Speak Up For A Non-toxic Work Environment
April 17, 2008 |
Employers are responsible to provide a safe work environment for their employees. Many employers pay close attention to employee safety concerning safe stairways and walkways, appropriate bathroom facilities, and tornado and fire drills. However, some employers do not take air quality or other sources of toxins seriously. If you are concerned about a toxic work environment, stand up for detoxification at work.
Of course, you don’t want to come off as the ‘weird trouble maker’ of the office, but there are ways to get your idea across with professionalism. For example, there was a young woman working in a laboratory environment where a safety manager was employed and safety procedures were in place. However, she noticed an unused vessel leaking in the corner of the basement where she worked. After a period of time, she began to ask people what it was and who was in charge of it. After much detective work, she found out that it was an abandoned experiment that had never been finished or cleaned up.
The content of the vessel contained possible carcinogens. The company immediately cleaned the area properly, but how many carcinogens was she and her fellow workers exposed to before it was cleared out? How many more people would have been exposed if she had not spoken up?
Even a benign office environment can contain toxic elements. For example, a detox diet may not do you much good if you are working in a confined office space without proper ventilation. A quick and unobtrusive fix may be the addition of an air purifier that you bring from home in your cubicle.
It is easy to think of the only source of bodily toxins at work as the candy filled vending machine, but a work environment has the potential to supply your system with unwanted substances. You can be an advocate for detoxification at work without being abrasive. Use common sense and communicate with a positive attitude in order to promote a detox program that will benefit everyone in the workplace.
