Many of us have heard about the potential dangers of using non stick cookware, but we may not have heard enough about it to throw out those pans. Another concern is that stainless steel and aluminum pans are now starting to raise red flags for health reasons with researchers and proponents of detoxification.

Teflon coated aluminum pots and pans use a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). In 2006 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advised that PFOA be labeled a “likely carcinogen”. Manufacturers are cutting down production of the line and developing new products. Meanwhile, consumers continue to buy the products thinking they are safe.

However, studies indicate the exposure to PFOA affects the brain, prostate, liver, and kidneys. A liver cleanse and a kidney cleanse may help, but why introduce toxins in the first place when you can avoid them? When rats were studied, several young rats died and female rats showed changes in the size of their pituitary glands. There is also the suggestion that it causes tumors. There were even toxins in the air surrounding a Teflon coated pan in use.

Many of us are already aware of the dangers of using non stick pans. Therefore, we dragged our old aluminum and stainless steel pans out of storage and started using them. However, there is some concern with these vessels as well. Aluminum reacts with some foods and this is a real cause for alarm since aluminum is becoming a main player in studies on Alzheimer’s.

Stainless steel is a better solution, but it can release nickel and possibly other metals into foods. This can be a serious problem for people with allergies to nickel or other metals.

The best choice? Turn to Grandma’s pots and pans. Good old cast iron is not only nontoxic, but it is actually good for you. Don’t worry about anemia when you are cooking with a cast iron pan. This is a great way to get even cooking without endangering your health and thwarting detoxification. Enamel cookware is also safe and easy to clean. Some manufacturers offer cast iron cookware with enamel coating.

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic Medicine practice. However, this technique of detoxifying toxins is still being practised today, as it is a very simple method that can be easily done at home.

Why would you want to know what oil pulling is? Well, it is natural remedy to treat gingivitis and whiten teeth. Skin conditions such as eczema, and acne are also known to have improved upon prolonged use. Oil pulling is also said to benefit in lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and even diminished migraines.

The type of oil to use is sunflower or sesame oil. Cold press oils are also highly desirable.

To oil pull, simply take 1 tablespoon of oil into the mouth on an empty stomach. Swish the oil in your mouth much as you would mouthwash being careful not to swallow the oil. If you swallow, it is no problem as well.

Pull the oil through your teeth as well as chomping and moving your jaws in a biting motion. The oil will change in consistency from thick and yellow to thin and foamy. This is due to the fact that your saliva is mixing with the oil bringing with it toxins being excreted sublingually through the tongue.

Swirl and pull the oil through your teeth for 15-20 minutes. At the end of the session spit the pulled oil into the sink or toilet. If you discard the oil in the sink, you also need to clean the sink with an antibacterial wipe or soap.

Rinse your mouth with water 2 to 3 times and then brush your teeth as normal. After a few weeks, your tongue will become noticeably pinker and healthier looking. Your teeth will be whiter and your breath will improve.

My aunt, who first told me about oil pulling, said that the movement massages and stimulates the sublingual muscles to excrete toxins stored up in the body. According to Ayurvedic practitioners, it is the the production of saliva that is the catalyst for the drawing out of bodily toxins.

My aunt recommends tilting the head so that the oil reaches all the way to the back of the molars. This is an advanced technique and not recommended for those just beginning. Remember to slowly swish and pull the oil in your mouth as there is no need to rush.

Oil pulling is best done on an an empty stomach. You run the risk of vomiting if you oil pull after eating. Hence, the best time to oil pull is in the morning, after you brush your teeth, but before breakfast. It is best that you wait an additional 10 minutes before you have breakfast. Oil pulling can be done 3 to 4 times a day but ensure that you do so on an empty stomach each time.

You need to avoid swallowing the oil after pulling. After the oil is pulled through, it contains toxins extracted from the body. Then again, if you do happen to swallow the oil, there is no need to panic either. It will be passed through your system.

If you experience any symptoms that appear to worsen after oil pulling, it is best to stop the practice immediately. Some people have very sensitive systems and because of individual physiology may not be able to oil pull. If in doubt, consult your Ayurvedic practitioner.
