To find out how to treat , it is important first to understand how this condition came upon.

Leaky gut syndrome refers to the increased permeability of the intestinal lining. The lining has become “leaky” and damaged most likely due to an overuse of antibiotics, poor diet, toxins, or infection. Increased permeability means that the lining does not absorb nutrients selectively, but allows large molecules and toxins to leak through the wall. When waste, toxins, undigested food, and other materials are allowed to pass through the intestinal lining, inflammation results. This then affects the functionality of the digestive tract.

How to treat leaky gut syndrome can be tricky since the intestinal lining is already damaged. The approach is one of reducing the damage that is already caused by preventing bacterial and yeast infections, making dietary changes and going on probiotics.

Targetting infections and parasites. Many experts say that leaky gut syndrome is caused by candida yeast infections. Natural remedies available to control candida including acidophilus, fresh garlic cloves, and dietary changes.

Adopting healthy diet. A high fiber diet is recommended along with the elimination of foods high in starch and sugar. It is also important to limit fungal foods such as mushrooms and cheese. Also avoid foods with yeast such as bread, alcohol, soy sauce, and vinegar.

Nutritional supplements to aid in digestive health. For example, essential oils like fish oil and flax seed oil may help a great deal and may be taken safely over time.

Probiotics to increase “helpful bacteria”. Every healthy digestive system is an ecosystem of micro-organisms. Probiotics are supplements that support the proper balance of bacteria in your system.

How to treat leaky gut syndrome should be an issue to be taken seriously. The consequences can be severe chronic symptoms that you have to live with for years.

Many people fail to seek treatment for their leaky gut syndrome symptoms as this condition is not commonly known under conventional medicine. However, naturopathic experts say that many chronic ailments are linked o the root cause of a leaky gut. Many forms of conventional treatment merely try to treat the symptoms without discovering the underlying condition.

The following symptoms are common indicators of :

• Gas
• Indigestion
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Compromised immune system
• Foggy thinking, anxiety, mood issues, and/or memory problems
• Fatigue
• Abdominal pain
• Chronic pain in joints and/or muscles
• Respiratory problems such as asthma or wheezing

Of course, if you look at the above list, you would never have guessed that they may also be symptoms. You may be of the opinion that they can point to any disease. Luckily, there is a test for this condition.

There are two chemicals that are both soluble in water and unused by the body. Mannitol is easily absorbed by a healthy intestinal lining. Lactulose is a large molecule and can only be slightly absorbed by healthy intestines. To do this test, you would need to drink a solution containing both these chemicals and then wait for 6 hours to collect your urine.

The amount of each chemical in the urine is used to calculate the amount absorbed by the person’s body. The function of the intestines is determined by how much of each substance was absorbed. A healthy test shows high levels of mannitol and low levels of lactulose. If high levels of both molecules are found, it indicates a leaky gut condition. If low levels of both molecules are found in the urine, it is a sign of a general malabsorption of all nutrients.
