The Unhealthy Diet of the Average American
July 22, 2008 |
If you are an average American, your leafy green intake will most likely be confined to the garnish on a restaurant platter or what makes up a regular hamburger. This is hardly much. Only in the face of an illness, will you begin to realise that you cannot live on this kind of diet. What you put at risk is your gastrointestinal health. It is no wonder that problems such as constipation, IBS or other digestive disorders are becoming more pervalent nowdays.
Additionally, you may also be one of the majority that buys your fruits and vegetables from the regular supermarket. Unfortunately, most of these fruits and vegetables are harvested with copious spraying of herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers, to improve shelf life and also to make them look waxed and beautifully colored. They are hardly healthy at all. Commercial growers are looking to generate quick sales, overlooking the risk of selling you products that are laden with toxins. So even if you ate plenty of fruits and vegetables but if they come from such a source, you are not in a better position either. You will find that your digestive system to be so clogged up with toxins that it is hard to evacuate accumulated waste.
Of course, there are some steps you can take to eat your fruit and enjoy the health benefits that would normally be associated with them. Choose to buy organic. Do not worry if they look less rosy than the ones you see regularly. They are no less in nutritional value. Also, note that the higher prices that you may have to pay for organic produce may well justify the improved health and therefore, less doctor fees that you need to pay eventually. Wash fruits and veggies thoroughly with distilled or pure water, to minimise any lingering microbes or other bacteria on the outside.
